« Bay Area DT/TD Summit | Main | My take of the Bay Area DT/TD Summit »

So I was trying to setup dasBlog with my host, Go Daddy.com. Let me start by saying they seem to be pretty reasonable, cost wise and their tools are pretty straightforward to use. With that being said now onto my experience.

So as you probably read earlier I have decided to go with dasBlog for my blogging engine. I installed it locally with no problems and was hoping for the same with my host. Turns out things are not so easy in that world. Copying the folders up was fairly straightforward. But then trying to establish the needed permissions is where the problem came. They have a pretty intuitive interface in regards to directory management but I still couldn't figure out if this was getting me the permissions I needed. So I decided to give them a call. Right away the first thing I notice is that they do not have an 800 number which sucks for me because they are out of state so it means that I am footing the bill on the call. Plus since I am not in a dedicated hosting environment my wait time was considerable, I think 10+ minutes at 6 in the morning. I tried the day before at around 6 at night and, well I won't even mention that hold time.

Finally I was able to get someone on the line, who by the way does not even know what IIS is so already I have a bad feeling about this call. Needless to say, but after a half hour of the following scenario: I tell him something, he tries to digest, he goes and tells my story to another tech, he returns with answer from tech that doesn't even address the issue that I am having, I get upset and re tell the story, repeat the cycle. Finally at the end of the call I decide that I am going to just cancel and move on because I know that other hosts exist out there that host dasBlog so I can't understand why this is so difficult.

But before I decide to cancel I try to use my good friend Google and see what I can find about other people trying to host dasBlog with Go Daddy. This is when hope starts to set in because I stumble across the following article: http://aakashjain.com/How+To+Setup+DasBlog+On+Godaddy.aspx which completely saves the day and as you can tell I am finally running dasBlog and I am still with Go Daddy.com.

Moral of the story is that if you want cheap and pretty decent hosting, as far as I can tell, then Go Daddy can really help out. Just don't call them for tech support.
